I’ve had a 1947 Oldsmobile coupe for a long time. It was my dad’s. It’s in amazing condition. No rust, not rust underneath. Good interior. Is mostly stock except the typical chrome wheels that were popular in the 70’s-80’s. Stock straight 8 engine. Pretty much just a cool old cruising car. I haven’t run it in about 5 years now. On a whim I think I’m going to put it back on the road for Sunday drives and the like. Getting it running isn’t an issue, I’m a pretty decent mechanic with a good grasp of what it needs except one thing.. the electrical system. It’s a 6 volt system. So I can just replace the 6 volt battery and run it or I can convert to 12v, but I’m not entirely sure what all I’d need. It’s obviously easier to just replace the 6v battery, but it’s easier to find a 12v battery, obviously. I’d spend more on conversion up front, but once done I can find a 12 battery easier when needed. I can find a suitable charger easier. I can jump start the car from anything on the road. I’m guessing to convert I’d need a new alternator. And probably all new bulbs. Maybe a different coil? I’m sure it would need a different starter. Seems like it would be more convenient to have a 12 system but less convenient to make it a 12 volt system. I guess I’m just venting into the internet void hoping for valid points to do one vs the other. Or maybe that a third option exists like a way to use a 12v battery but keep the 6v system in the car.
