Daily a classic? How to prevent rust

Hello hello,

I feel I should open with a bit of background, I have been a life long gearhead, I had wrecked my daily a little while back, and while in the process of looking for a new one came to a funny realization, classics are reasonable and new(er) cars are out of sight price wise. Does anyone have any experience daily driving a classic car getting you to work year round, as well as dealing with reliability as well as getting it insured. The other concern I have is rust, Chicago winters with salt are probably not kind to these cars. How do I prevent rust especially when it may be too cold out to wash regularly? Thank you everyone for your help, and let me know, can it be done, or am I just a bit crazy?
