Ford wanted to showcase its new 428 and created a sub-model of the Galaxie 500/XL called the 7-Litre. Mercury, not one to be left out, created the Monterey-based S-55, previously its answer to the Galaxie 500/XL for 1962-63. This updated version of the S-55 lasted through 1967.
