Bit of a weird and very specific request here. I'm an occasional volunteer researcher for the Oxford English Dictionary. The dictionary has recently added the term "blinker" in the sense of "A flashing light on a vehicle to show that it is about to change lanes or turn", and the earliest evidence they have in this sense is from 1937 (obviously other meanings of the same word, such as "a person who blinks", are earlier).
I've found this newspaper advert (from 1929) for a 1926 Hillman saloon (presumably the Hillman 14) with "dippers and the new Blinker lights". My question is whether this is referring to the same thing – is this talking about what in Britain would normally be known as indicators? Can anyone confirm whether a 1926 Hillman saloon would have flashing turn lights? Thanks in advance!
